Voutilainen 網站上提及「工藝之美在於其所需的精準與耐心(the beauty of the craft lies in the precision and patience it requires)」,對此 Voutilainen 指這句話不僅是他的個人信念,更是指導他日常工作的核心原則。

In the hallowed halls of horological artistry, independent watchmakers, with their unique vision, exquisite craftsmanship, and unwavering dedication to tradition, imbue time with a profound significance that transcends mere measurement. LA Collective had the distinct privilege of engaging in an in-depth conversation with Finnish independent watchmaking master Kari Voutilainen during the "Masters of Horology, Fifth Edition" exhibition. Mr. Voutilainen is renowned globally for his meticulous attention to detail, his commitment to preserving traditional watchmaking techniques, and his innovative exploration of movement design. This interview aims to unveil the philosophy and essence of craftsmanship behind the Voutilainen brand, and how he steadfastly upholds the original spirit of handcrafted watchmaking in an increasingly digital world, while also guiding the next generation of watchmakers.

Vision & Philosophy: The Soul and Evolution of Time

Kari Voutilainen's journey from Finland to Môtiers, the heart of Swiss watchmaking, is nothing short of legendary. When asked how the "soul" of his workshop has evolved since its founding in 2002, Mr. Voutilainen shared his deep understanding of watchmaking. His passion for mechanics began in 1983 when he entered watchmaking school, where he discovered his lifelong calling. This enthusiasm propelled him to continuously learn, taking him from Finland to Switzerland, where he pursued advanced studies in complicated watchmaking in 1988. This experience not only solidified his exquisite skills but also shaped his vision for independent watchmaking. He emphasizes that the soul of his workshop lies in its unwavering commitment to independence, operating without investors or partners, thereby ensuring that each timepiece embodies his personal vision and the essence of his craft. Today, Voutilainen's workshop has grown into a team of 47 individuals, producing approximately 80 timepieces annually, with all movement components manufactured in-house. This growth and evolution truly reflect the continuous refinement of its soul.

In  Voutilainen website, it states that "the beauty of the craft lies in the precision and patience it requires," a sentiment deeply echoed by Mr. Voutilainen. He believes this statement is not only his personal conviction but also a core principle guiding his daily work. In watchmaking, every detail demands extreme precision, and achieving this precision requires immense patience. From movement design and component manufacturing to final assembly and regulation, each step is a testament to the watchmaker's dedication and time.

Craftsmanship & Design: The Rhythm of the Movement and the Mastery of Aesthetics

Voutilainen's Caliber Vingt-8 movement is celebrated for its unique direct-impulse escapement with two escapement wheels, a feature that profoundly appeals to collectors who appreciate the "heartbeat" of a watch. Mr. Voutilainen notes that the greatest challenge in creating this escapement lies in its compatibility with traditional manufacturing methods and his steadfast refusal to use high-tech materials. He explains that his movements are an embodiment of classical mechanics, with all components meticulously crafted through traditional milling and drilling processes, rather than relying on advanced materials or manufacturing techniques.

The inspiration for this escapement originated from a natural escapement found in a Breguet watch he encountered while working in Germany early in his career. Mr. Voutilainen was deeply impressed by its precision and realized that the component shapes of this escapement could be produced using traditional machinery. He describes it as a fusion of a chronometer escapement and a Swiss lever escapement, where the impulse is directly delivered to the jewel on the balance staff, resulting in 30% greater efficiency compared to a Swiss lever escapement. Although it requires four escapement wheels instead of one, its exceptional timing performance and shock resistance have made it a signature characteristic of Voutilainen timepieces.

Regarding aesthetic control, Mr. Voutilainen's ownership of the Comblémine dial factory grants him unparalleled command over dial design. He states that he has never employed external designers, preferring to personally oversee all design aspects. He conceptualizes dial styles based on whether a watch is intended to be sporty or classical, envisioning various guilloché patterns. Collaborating with his team, he experiments with different patterns, leveraging his rich imagination to create distinctive visual effects. In color selection, Mr. Voutilainen is equally hands-on, exploring diverse color combinations to ensure legibility and overall harmony in the timepiece. He emphasizes that the interplay of dial and hand colors, along with the balance of the overall design, are his primary objectives.

Discussing the KV21 Tonneau watch, a departure from his traditional round cases, Mr. Voutilainen explains two key reasons behind this barrel-shaped design. Firstly, the new movement architecture allows for the display of the transmission wheel train beneath the X-shaped bridges, which were previously concealed by the dial. This design not only adds a sense of visual mystery but also facilitates the integration of circular indications, such as a date disc, without increasing the movement's thickness. Secondly, from a logistical standpoint, managing the production of two distinct movements simultaneously became overly complex, leading him to focus on a single base caliber to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.

Collaboration & Legacy: Cross-Disciplinary Artistry and the Continuation of Handcrafted Philosophy

Voutilainen's recent collaboration with Louis Vuitton (LVKV-02 GMR 6) has garnered significant attention. When asked how he maintained his "DNA" in this partnership, Mr. Voutilainen described it as a challenging yet opportune collaboration. He emphasized that the collaboration was predicated on mutual agreement regarding the creative direction, and he insisted on undertaking only what he excels at. He integrated his past experiences and techniques into this project, avoiding unfamiliar territories to ensure the quality of the final product. Furthermore, he enjoyed considerable design freedom and had a two-year timeframe to complete the project, which allowed him to flawlessly execute the timepiece without disrupting his regular production.

As a mentor to many young watchmakers, Mr. Voutilainen deeply contemplates the transmission of the handcrafted watchmaking philosophy in the digital age. He admits to concerns about the future, which is why, from the outset, his workshop has been dedicated to meticulously documenting every watchmaking process. They create drawings and record every detail of assembly and decoration, ensuring that this written information can be passed down without distortion from oral transmission. He stresses that sharing information is crucial for future generations. Today, he delegates more of the daily operations to his managing director, allowing him to focus on more complex and challenging creations, thereby setting an example for future watchmakers.

When a collector wears a Voutilainen watch fifty years from now, gazing at the dial and listening to the movement's rhythm, what does Mr. Voutilainen hope they will feel? He states that he would choose a timepiece that is very special to him, one inspired by the pocket watch he completed in 1994. He hopes people will perceive the exquisite layout of the movement, the iconic design, and the original and unique case shape. He firmly believes that this will be a cherished work in the future.

Kari Voutilainen's odyssey in watchmaking is more than a mere career; it is a fervent dedication to passion, an unyielding commitment to perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of innovation. He transcends the role of a master craftsman, emerging as a true curator of time itself. Through each meticulously crafted timepiece, he articulates a profound reverence for traditional artistry, an uncompromised quest for aesthetic perfection, and a visionary aspiration for the generations yet to come. A Voutilainen timepiece embodies far more than precise timekeeping; it encapsulates an eternal artistic value and an unforgettable emotional resonance, a legacy meticulously etched in time, curated by the unwavering human hand.
